Pan Wendt

Pan Wendt has been Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery since returning to Canada in 2010. He is also co-curator of Art in the Open, Charlottetown’s outdoor visual arts festival.
Born in Halifax, and raised on Prince Edward Island, Pan comes from a family of artists and has been heavily involved in the arts for most of his life. He studied art history at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts (BA) and after spending nearly a decade developing a passion for, and producing “unofficial” cultural events, he began publishing contemporary art criticism, organizing exhibitions and happenings, and working as an arts administrator.
Following further studies (MA, Clark Art Institute, MA, Yale University, MPhil, Yale University), Pan began working as a freelance curator and academic researcher. Exhibitions included James Lee Byars: Letters From the World’s Most Famous Unknown Artist (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, 2004); Colleen Wolstenholme: A Divided Room (Confederation Centre Art Gallery, 2007); Funkaesthetics (with Luis Jacob, University of Toronto, 2008). He won fellowships to conduct research at the Fondazione Pistoletto (Biella, Italy, 2007) and at the Yale University Art Gallery (included in the publication A Modern World: American Design from the Yale University Art Gallery).
In 2010, Pan was appointed Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, where he has organized over 50 exhibitions and contributed to numerous publications on Canadian contemporary art. He also co-founded Art in the Open, and has served on numerous regional and national arts juries, including Canada Council for the Arts, P.E.I. Council of the Arts, Sobey Art Award, BMO First Art Award, RBC National Painting Award, Art in the City Commission, and the Lieutenant Governor’s Architecture Award.
